Berlin\/Cologne (19 Decem\u00adber 2012)<\/strong> \u2014 Ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny in 2012 will only be slight\u00adly hig\u00adher than the pre\u00advious year. The major influence was the cool wea\u00adther for seve\u00adral months during the first half of the year and also the fact that it was a leap year. Due to the eco\u00adno\u00admic slow\u00addown, the\u00adre were hard\u00adly any con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-enhan\u00adcing influen\u00adces. The\u00adre were also other con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-dam\u00adpe\u00adning fac\u00adtors such as the increase in ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy. In total in 2012 in Ger\u00adma\u00adny, accor\u00adding to preli\u00admi\u00adna\u00adry cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons by the Arbeits\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen (AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen) \u2014 Working Group on Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces (Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces Group), 13,512 peta\u00adjoules (PJ), or 461.1 mil\u00adli\u00adon ton\u00adnes of coal equi\u00adva\u00adlent (Mtce), were con\u00adsu\u00admed.<\/p>

Total oil con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in 2012 was 4,513 PJ (154 Mtce), slight\u00adly below the pre\u00advious year. The\u00adre was growth for die\u00adsel fuel (+1%) and avia\u00adti\u00adon fuel (+5%) and hea\u00advy fuel oil and lique\u00adfied petro\u00adle\u00adum gas (about 7%). Sales of light fuel oil were sta\u00adble. The\u00adre were decli\u00adnes for gaso\u00adli\u00adne (-5%) and naph\u00adtha (-1%). The share of oil in total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon fell slight\u00adly to 33.3 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year 33.9%).<\/p>

The coo\u00adler wea\u00adther in Febru\u00adary and April com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year resul\u00adted in an increase in natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon for heat sup\u00adp\u00adly. The input for elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon in public power plants was, howe\u00adver, well below the pre\u00advious year\u2018s level. Total natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in 2012 increased by about 1 per\u00adcent to 2,835 PJ (96.7 Mtce). Natu\u00adral gas ther\u00adeby main\u00adtai\u00adned a sta\u00adble 21 per\u00adcent share (pre\u00advious year: 20.9%) of total dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon.<\/p>

Coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon increased by 3.1 per\u00adcent to 1,671 PJ (57.0 Mtce). This deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment is main\u00adly due to an increased use for elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty and heat pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. The steel indus\u00adtry, in con\u00adtrast, dimi\u00adnis\u00adhed its demand for coke and coal by more than 4 per\u00adcent. The share of coal in total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in 2012 increased slight\u00adly to 12.4 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year 12.1%).<\/p>

Lig\u00adni\u00adte con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon increased by about 5 per\u00adcent to 1,642 PJ (56.0 Mtce). The com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adning of three new power plant units had a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant impact on this increase. By the end of the year, seve\u00adral old plants were taken off the grid, so that the use of lig\u00adni\u00adte for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon in the coming year will fall again. In 2012 the share of lig\u00adni\u00adte in total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was 12.2 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year 11.6%) due to this spe\u00adcial fac\u00adtor.<\/p>

Nuclear ener\u00adgy decreased its con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to the ener\u00adgy balan\u00adce in the wake of the decis\u00adi\u00adon to shut down, by about 8 per\u00adcent. Its share of the ener\u00adgy mix drop\u00adped to 8 per\u00adcent.
The use of rene\u00adwa\u00adbles in 2012 increased by near\u00adly 8 per\u00adcent. Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles ther\u00adeby increased their share of total con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon to 11.7 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year 10.9%). Com\u00adpared with the pre\u00advious year, wind decreased by 8 per\u00adcent. For hydro (exclu\u00adding pum\u00adped sto\u00adrage), howe\u00adver, the\u00adre was an increase of 16 per\u00adcent. Pho\u00adto\u00advol\u00adtaic con\u00adtin\u00adued its dyna\u00admic expan\u00adsi\u00adon and increased by almost 50 per\u00adcent.<\/p>

Other ener\u00adgy sources, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly dome\u00adstic and indus\u00adtri\u00adal was\u00adte, increased by 4 per\u00adcent. Accor\u00adding to initi\u00adal esti\u00adma\u00adtes, cross-bor\u00adder power trade show\u00aded a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant export sur\u00adplus.<\/p>

Share of renewables increased<\/h2>

In 2012 Ger\u00adma\u00adny enjoy\u00aded a diver\u00adse ener\u00adgy mix. The decli\u00adning share of nuclear ener\u00adgy goes tog\u00ade\u00adther with incre\u00adasing amounts of rene\u00adwa\u00adble ener\u00adgy. The increased con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon of coal in 2012 is due, for lig\u00adni\u00adte, to the moder\u00adni\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon of old instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons and for coal, to its cur\u00adrent favoura\u00adble com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve posi\u00adti\u00adon over natu\u00adral gas for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. In 2012, oil and natu\u00adral gas also made sta\u00adble con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adons to the country\u2018s wide\u00adly diver\u00adsi\u00adfied ener\u00adgy sup\u00adp\u00adly.<\/p>

CO\u2082 emissions increased<\/h2>

In Ger\u00adma\u00adny, increased ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon and increased use of fos\u00adsil fuels are expec\u00adted to result in an increase in CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons, in abso\u00adlu\u00adte terms. Adjus\u00adted for the effect of tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre, CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons have slight\u00adly decreased.<\/p>
