This equ\u00adals an increase of 1.6 per\u00adcent com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year. Accor\u00adding to cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons and sur\u00adveys con\u00adduc\u00adted by the Arbeits\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen (AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen) \u2013 Working Group on Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces (Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces Group), the increase is due to the wea\u00adther, which was coo\u00adler than the pre\u00advious year, as well as this year\u2019s leap day, the con\u00adti\u00adnuous\u00adly posi\u00adti\u00adve eco\u00adno\u00admic trend, and the growth in popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon. The increase in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was aba\u00adted by fur\u00adther impro\u00adve\u00adments in ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy, the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen explai\u00adned. Increa\u00adses in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon were recor\u00added for natu\u00adral gas and mine\u00adral oil as well as rene\u00adwa\u00adbles. Nuclear ener\u00adgy as well as hard coal and lig\u00adni\u00adte exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a down\u00adturn. Wit\u00adhout the impact of the wea\u00adther, ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon would have increased by only 1 per\u00adcent when com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year.<\/p><p>Accor\u00adding to initi\u00adal esti\u00adma\u00adtes made by the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen, ener\u00adgy-rela\u00adted CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons will increase by 0.9 per\u00adcent. The reduc\u00adtion of emis\u00adsi\u00adons, which is due to the decreased con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of hard coal and lig\u00adni\u00adte, was more than com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adted by the hig\u00adher con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of natu\u00adral gas and mine\u00adral oil. If adjus\u00adted to the wea\u00adther effect and the leap day, then the increase in CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons amounts to only 0.6 per\u00adcent.<\/p><h2>A Plus for Oil and Gas as well as Renewables<\/h2><p>With an increase of 1.8 per\u00adcent in 2016, mine\u00adral oil con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was slight\u00adly hig\u00adher than the pre\u00advious year. Total con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon amoun\u00adted to 4,562 PJ or 155.8 Mtce. The con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of die\u00adsel fuel, which increased by 4.5 per\u00adcent, con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly to this trend. Sales of avia\u00adti\u00adon fuel also exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a plus; they increased by 4 per\u00adcent. In con\u00adtrast, sales of gaso\u00adli\u00adne remain\u00aded vir\u00adtual\u00adly unch\u00adan\u00adged; and sales of light and hea\u00advy fuel oils decli\u00adned by 3 per\u00adcent respec\u00adtively. Sup\u00adpli\u00ades of naph\u00adtha to the che\u00admi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry drop\u00adped by almost 1 per\u00adcent.<\/p><p>Natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon increased signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly by around 10 per\u00adcent to 3,043 PJ or 103.8 Mtce. This growth in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was due to the coo\u00adler wea\u00adther \u2013 pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly during the last quar\u00adter of the year \u2013 when com\u00adpared to 2015 and the increased use of natu\u00adral gas in power plants, par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly in coge\u00adnera\u00adti\u00adon plants. In addi\u00adti\u00adon, new gas fired power plants went into ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon.<\/p><p>Hard coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon drop\u00adped by 4 per\u00adcent to 1,635 PJ or 55.8 Mtce. Its use in power plants for the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of power and heat, thus, decreased by 6.2 per\u00adcent. The use of coke and coal in the Ger\u00adman steel indus\u00adtry remain\u00aded to a lar\u00adge ext\u00adent unch\u00adan\u00adged. All told, about two thirds of the enti\u00adre hard coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny can be attri\u00adbu\u00adted to power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. The use of hard coal for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon was influen\u00adced by the fact that more elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty was pro\u00addu\u00adced from natu\u00adral gas and more elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty was fed into the grid from off\u00adshore wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes.<\/p><p>Lig\u00adni\u00adte con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decreased by 2.6 per\u00adcent and achie\u00adved a volu\u00adme of 1,525 PJ or 52.0 Mtce. Appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 90 per\u00adcent of the extra\u00adc\u00adted lig\u00adni\u00adte are used in power plants for the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of power and heat. Becau\u00adse of the redu\u00adced avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of power plants, the decrease in power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon and the decrease in pro\u00adduc\u00adtion exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a simi\u00adlar reduc\u00adtion.<\/p><p>Nuclear ener\u00adgy exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a minus of 7.4 per\u00adcent com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year, which is due to a num\u00adber of sche\u00addu\u00adled power plant over\u00adhauls and the decom\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adning of the Gra\u00adfen\u00adrhein\u00adfeld nuclear power plant in mid 2015.<\/p><p>Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles enhan\u00adced their con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to the ener\u00adgy balan\u00adce by a total of 2.9 per\u00adcent to 1,692 PJ or 57.7 Mtce. Bio\u00admass recor\u00added a plus of 3 per\u00adcent. While power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from hydro power (exclu\u00adding pum\u00adped sto\u00adrage) increased by 13 per\u00adcent, wind power on land and off shore exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a slight over\u00adall increase of 1 per\u00adcent. In con\u00adtrast, the share of solar ener\u00adgy (pho\u00adto\u00advol\u00adtaics and solar ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy) decreased by 1 per\u00adcent.<\/p><h2>Well Balanced Energy Mix<\/h2><p>The struc\u00adtu\u00adre of ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon (ener\u00adgy mix) in Ger\u00adma\u00adny con\u00adti\u00adnues to be cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adzed by mine\u00adral oil (34 per\u00adcent). As a result of its ups\u00adwing, natu\u00adral gas now covers almost 23 per\u00adcent of the total con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon. Hard coal accounts for a pro\u00adpor\u00adti\u00adon of more than 12 per\u00adcent and lig\u00adni\u00adte for about 11 per\u00adcent. Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles slight\u00adly increased their con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to curr\u00adent\u00adly 12.6 per\u00adcent. All told, the Ger\u00adman ener\u00adgy sup\u00adp\u00adly is based on a broad mix of available ener\u00adgy sources.
