Accor\u00adding to cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons con\u00adduc\u00adted by the Arbeits\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen (AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen) \u2013 Working Group on Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces (Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces Group), con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon drop\u00adped by 5 per\u00adcent to 12,900 peta\u00adjoules (PJ), or 440.2 mil\u00adli\u00adon tons of coal equi\u00adva\u00adlent (Mtce), when com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year. Ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny, thus, rea\u00adched its lowest level sin\u00adce the ear\u00adly 1970s.<\/p>

Sin\u00adce the decli\u00adnes in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon affec\u00adted all fos\u00adsil fuels whe\u00adre\u00adas increa\u00adses were only repor\u00adted for rene\u00adwa\u00adbles, the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen anti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtes a decli\u00adne in ener\u00adgy-rela\u00adted CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons amoun\u00adting to well abo\u00adve 6 per\u00adcent.<\/p>

Accor\u00adding to the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen, Germany\u2019s decreased ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon is pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly due to the increase in pri\u00adces, the mild wea\u00adther as well as impro\u00adve\u00adments in ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy. The con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-enhan\u00adcing impact of the fac\u00adtors eco\u00adno\u00admic trend and popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon growth, though, beca\u00adme less rele\u00advant in 2018. Wit\u00adhout the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-redu\u00adcing impact of the mild wea\u00adther, con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon would have fal\u00adlen almost 4 per\u00adcent below the pre\u00advious year\u2019s level.<\/p>

Mine\u00adral oil con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decreased by a total of 5.6 per\u00adcent in 2018. Sales of fuel oils recor\u00added the stron\u00adgest decli\u00adne. Gaso\u00adli\u00adne and die\u00adsel fuel decreased only slight\u00adly; in con\u00adtrast, sales of avia\u00adti\u00adon fuel exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a plus.<\/p>

Germany\u2019s natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon also exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a down\u00adward trend in 2018; it decreased by a total of 7.3 per\u00adcent. After the cold wea\u00adther had led to a con\u00adsidera\u00adble increase in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon during the first quar\u00adter of the year, hig\u00adher tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtures cau\u00adsed con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon to decrease in the space hea\u00adting mar\u00adket during the rema\u00adin\u00adder of the year. The decli\u00adne in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon during the enti\u00adre year was also influen\u00adced by the con\u00adtin\u00adued increase in power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from rene\u00adwa\u00adbles as well as the pri\u00adce trend.<\/p>

Hard coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny decreased by 11.2 per\u00adcent in 2018. With more than 16 per\u00adcent, the use of hard coal for the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of power and heat in power plants exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly strong decli\u00adne. The increase in both the power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from rene\u00adwa\u00adble sources as well as the increase in fuel cos\u00adts, par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly CO\u2082 pri\u00adces, con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted to this decli\u00adne. The con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of coke and coking coal in the Ger\u00adman steel indus\u00adtry was below the pre\u00advious year\u2019s level.<\/p>

Lig\u00adni\u00adte con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon went down for the sixth time in a row in 2018. The decli\u00adne in 2018 amoun\u00adted to 1.9 per\u00adcent becau\u00adse the power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from lig\u00adni\u00adte decli\u00adned as well. Due to the trans\u00adfer of power plant units into their stand\u00adby mode for back\u00adup pur\u00adpo\u00adses, the use of lig\u00adni\u00adte for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon will decrease by a total of 13 per\u00adcent by 2020 when com\u00adpared to 2015.<\/p>

Com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year, nuclear ener\u00adgy exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a slight reduc\u00adtion in power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon amoun\u00adting to 0.3 per\u00adcent.<\/p>

Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles enhan\u00adced their con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to the total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in 2018 by a total of 2.1 per\u00adcent. Wind ener\u00adgy had a plus of 7 per\u00adcent. Solar ener\u00adgy exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a plus of 16 per\u00adcent. Bio\u00admass remain\u00aded at the pre\u00advious year\u2019s level and hydro power recor\u00added a minus of 16 per\u00adcent.<\/p>

Com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year, the con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adons of the diver\u00adse ener\u00adgy sources to the natio\u00adnal ener\u00adgy mix have shifted fur\u00adther in 2018: Fos\u00adsil ener\u00adgy expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced an over\u00adall decli\u00adne so that the Ger\u00adman ener\u00adgy sup\u00adp\u00adly was able to redu\u00adce its car\u00adbon inten\u00adsi\u00adty even fur\u00adther. A cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adristic fea\u00adture, howe\u00adver, con\u00adti\u00adnues to be the broad ener\u00adgy mix. Oil and gas account for almost 58 per\u00adcent of the dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon. Hard coal and lig\u00adni\u00adte coll\u00adec\u00adtively cover\u00aded slight\u00adly more than one fifth of the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon. Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles increased their share to 14 per\u00adcent.<\/p>
