With a total volu\u00adme of 12,963 peta\u00adjoules (PJ), or 442.3 mil\u00adli\u00adon tons of coal equi\u00adva\u00adlents (Mtce), con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was actual\u00adly 3.5 per\u00adcent below the pre\u00advious year\u2019s level. As out\u00adlined by the Arbeits\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen (AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen) \u2013 Working Group on Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces (Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces Group) in its recent\u00adly published Annu\u00adal Report for 2018, this deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment is due to signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly increased pri\u00adces for ener\u00adgy, the mild wea\u00adther as well as a strong increase in ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty. In con\u00adtrast, the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-enhan\u00adcing fac\u00adtors eco\u00adno\u00admic trend and growth in popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon rece\u00added into the back\u00adground. Accor\u00adding to cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons made by the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen, ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon would have decreased by 2.4 per\u00adcent wit\u00adhout the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-redu\u00adcing impact of the mild wea\u00adther.<\/p><p>When it comes to the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon last year, one of the sur\u00adpri\u00adses was the sharp increase of the macroe\u00adco\u00adno\u00admic ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty by 5.2 per\u00adcent (tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre- adjus\u00adted, plus 4.0 per\u00adcent). This para\u00adme\u00adter for an effi\u00adci\u00adent use of ener\u00adgy is cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adted from the ener\u00adgy input per unit of eco\u00adno\u00admic per\u00adfor\u00admance. The long-term avera\u00adge value of this para\u00adme\u00adter amounts to appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 2 per\u00adcent.<\/p><p>The deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon, but also struc\u00adtu\u00adral chan\u00adges in the ener\u00adgy mix ent\u00adail\u00aded that the ener\u00adgy-rela\u00adted CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons in Ger\u00adma\u00adny decreased by about 34 mil\u00adli\u00adon tons (Mt) in 2018. This equ\u00adals a decli\u00adne of 4.8 per\u00adcent when com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year. Even when taking the tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre effect into account, the reduc\u00adtion is still signi\u00adfi\u00adcant with almost 4 per\u00adcent and about 27 Mt respec\u00adtively.<\/p><h2>Conventional Energy Carriers on the Minus Side<\/h2><p>In 2018, mine\u00adral oil con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny decreased by a total of 5.0 per\u00adcent to 4,443 PJ (151.6 Mtce). Except for avia\u00adti\u00adon fuels, all mine\u00adral oil pro\u00adducts recor\u00added a decli\u00adne: Con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of die\u00adsel fuel went down by 3.1 per\u00adcent; gaso\u00adli\u00adnes exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a minus of 1.4 per\u00adcent. With 16 per\u00adcent, the decli\u00adne in the sales of light fuel oil was excep\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly sharp; howe\u00adver, the\u00adre are indi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons that con\u00adsu\u00admers first used up their own stocks in light of the high pri\u00adces, and that the actu\u00adal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was hig\u00adher than the sales in the trade sec\u00adtor. When it comes to avia\u00adti\u00adon fuels, con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon recor\u00added a plus of 2.3 per\u00adcent.<\/p><p>Natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon pea\u00adk\u00aded at 3,071 PJ (104.8 Mtce) in 2018 and was, thus, 1.6 per\u00adcent below the pre\u00advious year\u2019s value. The pri\u00adma\u00adry reason for this decli\u00adne was the redu\u00adced use of natu\u00adral gas for hea\u00adting pur\u00adpo\u00adses becau\u00adse it was about 7.5 per\u00adcent war\u00admer than in 2017 and<br>12.3 per\u00adcent mil\u00adder than the long-term avera\u00adge. Towards the end of the year, the cut\u00adback in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the che\u00admi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry resul\u00adted in a decli\u00adning demand for natu\u00adral gas. In addi\u00adti\u00adon, less natu\u00adral gas was used for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon in 2018.<\/p><p>Hard coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was once again cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adzed by a strong decli\u00adne. Com\u00adpared to 2017, con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decreased by 11.2 per\u00adcent to 1,301 PJ (44.4 Mtce); it thus attai\u00adned the lowest level in Ger\u00adman post-war histo\u00adry. The use of hard coal for the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of elec\u00adtric power and heat went down by 16 per\u00adcent to about 26 Mt. In 2018, almost 59 per\u00adcent of the hard coal volu\u00adme in Ger\u00adma\u00adny were used for the gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of elec\u00adtric power and heat. The down\u00adward trend reflects the expan\u00adsi\u00adon of rene\u00adwa\u00adbles in power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon through which elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty from hard coal is incre\u00adasing\u00adly being repla\u00adced and becau\u00adse of which a num\u00adber of power plant units were decom\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adned in 2018. The use of hard coal in the steel indus\u00adtry decreased slight\u00adly by almost 2 per\u00adcent to 17.3 Mt in 2018. At the end of 2018, indus\u00adtri\u00adal hard coal mining was dis\u00adcon\u00adtin\u00adued in Ger\u00adma\u00adny. In the future, Ger\u00adma\u00adny will satis\u00adfy its demand for hard coal and hard coal coke enti\u00adre\u00adly through imports.<\/p><p>Lig\u00adni\u00adte con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon pea\u00adk\u00aded at 1,465 PJ (50.0 Mtce). Thus, the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decreased for the sixth time in a row. The decli\u00adne amoun\u00adted to 2.9 per\u00adcent due to the decre\u00adasing use of lig\u00adni\u00adte for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. By 2020, the use of lig\u00adni\u00adte for power gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon will decrease by a total of 13 per\u00adcent when com\u00adpared to 2015 which is due to the fact that a num\u00adber of power plants will be trans\u00adfer\u00adred into the secu\u00adre and relia\u00adble stand\u00adby mode for back\u00adup pur\u00adpo\u00adses.<\/p><p>Nuclear ener\u00adgy exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a slight minus of 0.4 per\u00adcent. All told, nuclear ener\u00adgy still con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted to the ener\u00adgy balan\u00adce with a share of 829 PJ (28.3 Mtce) in 2018.<\/p><p>Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles bene\u00adfi\u00adted from the instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon of addi\u00adtio\u00adnal capa\u00adci\u00adties \u2013 spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly when it comes to pho\u00adto\u00advol\u00adtaics \u2013 as well as from the par\u00adti\u00adal\u00adly extre\u00adme wea\u00adther con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons; they increased their con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to the total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon by 1.1 per\u00adcent to 1,809 PJ (61.7 Mtce). The num\u00adber of suns\u00adhi\u00adne hours rea\u00adched a record level so that the total use of solar ener\u00adgy was able to post an increase of 16.5 per\u00adcent. Wind ener\u00adgy also expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced a record year; it increased its share in the ener\u00adgy balan\u00adce by 5.6 per\u00adcent. In con\u00adtrast, the extre\u00adme\u00adly low pre\u00adci\u00adpi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon cau\u00adsed hydro\u00adpower (wit\u00adhout pum\u00adped sto\u00adrage faci\u00adli\u00adties) to drop by almost one fifth. Bio\u00admass, who\u00adse share in the con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon of rene\u00adwa\u00adbles curr\u00adent\u00adly amounts to 53.6 per\u00adcent, recor\u00added a minus of 2 per\u00adcent which was pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly due to the mil\u00adder wea\u00adther. Geo\u00adther\u00admal ener\u00adgy remain\u00aded at the pre\u00advious year\u2019s level.<\/p><h2>Shifts in the Energy Mix<\/h2><p>Rene\u00adwa\u00adbles were able to expand their shares in the ener\u00adgy mix for 2018. Bio\u00admass, solar ener\u00adgy, wind ener\u00adgy, hydro\u00adpower, geo\u00adther\u00admal ener\u00adgy, and the bio\u00adge\u00adnic share of was\u00adte accoun\u00adted for a total of 14.0 per\u00adcent of the enti\u00adre dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon. The most important ener\u00adgy car\u00adri\u00ader con\u00adtin\u00adued to be mine\u00adral oil with a share of 34.3 per\u00adcent, fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by natu\u00adral gas with 23.7 per\u00adcent. Hard coal accoun\u00adted for a share of 10.0 per\u00adcent and lig\u00adni\u00adte for 11.3 per\u00adcent. The con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon of nuclear ener\u00adgy amoun\u00adted to 6.4 per\u00adcent.<\/p><h2>Domestic Production Continued to Decrease<\/h2><p>Dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion exhi\u00adbi\u00adted a 2.8 per\u00adcent decli\u00adne to 3,891 PJ (132.8 Mtce) in 2018. While rene\u00adwa\u00adble ener\u00adgy sources increased their con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion by almost 1 per\u00adcent, all other ener\u00adgy car\u00adri\u00aders exhi\u00adbi\u00adted decli\u00adnes. With a minus of almost 30 per\u00adcent, the decli\u00adne in dome\u00adstic hard coal pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, which was com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly dis\u00adcon\u00adtin\u00adued by the end of the year 2018, was par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly high. Dome\u00adstic natu\u00adral gas pro\u00adduc\u00adtion decreased by 12.6 per\u00adcent and mine\u00adral oil accoun\u00adted for a minus of more than 7 per\u00adcent. Dome\u00adstic lig\u00adni\u00adte pro\u00adduc\u00adtion went down by 2.9 per\u00adcent. All told, ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion from dome\u00adstic resour\u00adces was able to cover 30 per\u00adcent of the enti\u00adre con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon. Today, the most important dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy source are rene\u00adwa\u00adbles with a pro\u00adpor\u00adti\u00adon of 46.3 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year: 44.6 %). They were fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by lig\u00adni\u00adte with 38.4 per\u00adcent (pre\u00advious year: 38.5 %). The other ener\u00adgy car\u00adri\u00aders gai\u00adned shares in the low sin\u00adgle digit ran\u00adge.<\/p><p>Ger\u00adma\u00adny has to meet around 70 per\u00adcent of its demand for ener\u00adgy through imports. Rus\u00adsia has beco\u00adme the most important sup\u00adpli\u00ader by far. In 2018, 36.3 per\u00adcent of the Ger\u00adman cru\u00adde oil imports came from Rus\u00adsia; tog\u00ade\u00adther with the other sta\u00adtes of the for\u00admer Soviet Uni\u00adon (CIS), the share actual\u00adly amounts to almost 53 per\u00adcent. When it comes to hard coal, sup\u00adpli\u00ades from Rus\u00adsia account for a share of about 40 per\u00adcent.
