When com\u00adpared to 2006, the year with the hig\u00adhest ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon so far in Ger\u00adma\u00adny sin\u00adce Ger\u00adman Reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon, the decli\u00adne amoun\u00adted to about 21 per\u00adcent, reports the Arbeits\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen (AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen) \u2013 Working Group on Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces (Ener\u00adgy Balan\u00adces Group).<\/p><p>Due to the decre\u00adasing con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon as well as other shifts in the ener\u00adgy mix in favor of rene\u00adwa\u00adbles and natu\u00adral gas, the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen anti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtes a decli\u00adne in ener\u00adgy-rela\u00adted CO\u2082 emis\u00adsi\u00adons of appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 80 mil\u00adli\u00adon tons. This equ\u00adals a decrease of about 12 per\u00adcent when com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year.<\/p><p>The signi\u00adfi\u00adcant decli\u00adne in the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly due to the macroe\u00adco\u00adno\u00admic and sec\u00adto\u00adral effects of the coro\u00adna\u00advi\u00adrus pan\u00adde\u00admic. This was accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by such long-term trends as the addi\u00adtio\u00adnal increase in ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy, sub\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons in the ener\u00adgy mix towards more rene\u00adwa\u00adble ener\u00adgy as well as the com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adb\u00adly mild wea\u00adther. Slight con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-enhan\u00adcing effects emana\u00adted from the ener\u00adgy pri\u00adces which drop\u00adped noti\u00adce\u00adab\u00adly over the cour\u00adse of the year. Accor\u00adding to esti\u00adma\u00adtes con\u00adduc\u00adted by the AG Ener\u00adgie\u00adbi\u00adlan\u00adzen, the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon-dam\u00adpe\u00adning effect of the mild wea\u00adther was lar\u00adge\u00adly off\u00adset by the stock\u00adpi\u00adling of light fuel oil.<\/p><p>Mine\u00adral oil con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decli\u00adned by a total of 12.1 per\u00adcent to 3,965 peta\u00adjoules (PJ), or&nbsp;135.3 mil\u00adli\u00adon tons of coal equi\u00adva\u00adlent (Mtce), in 2020. While sales of gaso\u00adli\u00adne and die\u00adsel fuel decreased slight\u00adly, the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of avia\u00adti\u00adon fuel was redu\u00adced by half. Light fuel oil expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced increa\u00adses in sales amoun\u00adting to more than 5 per\u00adcent becau\u00adse many con\u00adsu\u00admers used the low pri\u00adces to rep\u00adle\u00adnish their stocks. Sup\u00adpli\u00ades of naph\u00adtha for the che\u00admi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry increased by about 3 per\u00adcent.<\/p><p>Natu\u00adral gas con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon decreased by 3.4 per\u00adcent to 3,105 PJ, or 106.0 Mtce, in 2020. The pri\u00adma\u00adry reason for the decli\u00adne in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was the redu\u00adced demand for natu\u00adral gas in the indus\u00adtry as well as the trade, com\u00admer\u00adce, and ser\u00advice sec\u00adtors which was a result of the coro\u00adna\u00advi\u00adrus pan\u00adde\u00admic. In con\u00adtrast, more natu\u00adral gas was used for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty and heat. For pri\u00adva\u00adte house\u00adholds, a slight plus in con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon is anti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adted despi\u00adte the com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adb\u00adly mil\u00adder tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtures.<\/p><p>Hard coal con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon was 18.3 per\u00adcent below the value for the same peri\u00adod last year and pea\u00adk\u00aded at 894 PJ, which trans\u00adla\u00adtes into 30.5 Mtce, in 2020. When it comes to the use of hard coal in power plants that gene\u00adra\u00adte elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty and heat, the decli\u00adne amoun\u00adted to more than 26 per\u00adcent. This deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment is, in par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar, due to the fact that elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced a decli\u00adne, hig\u00adher volu\u00admes of elec\u00adtric power from wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes and PV sys\u00adtems were fed into the grid, and more natu\u00adral gas was used for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty. The weak demand for steel when com\u00adpared to 2019 cau\u00adsed the use of hard coal in the steel indus\u00adtry to decrease by appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 14 per\u00adcent.<\/p><p>Lig\u00adni\u00adte con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon drop\u00adped by 18.2 per\u00adcent and amoun\u00adted to 950 PJ, which trans\u00adla\u00adtes into 32.4 Mtce, in 2020. This deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment has various cau\u00adses: Addi\u00adtio\u00adnal power plant units were trans\u00adfer\u00adred into their stand\u00adby mode for back\u00adup pur\u00adpo\u00adses; and due to the wea\u00adther, hig\u00adher volu\u00admes of elec\u00adtric power from wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes and PV sys\u00adtems were fed into the grid. This was accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by unplan\u00adned power plant outa\u00adges, the effects of the coro\u00adna\u00advi\u00adrus pan\u00adde\u00admic on power con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon as well as shifts in the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve situa\u00adti\u00adon on the natio\u00adnal and Euro\u00adpean elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty mar\u00adkets due to low pri\u00adces for natu\u00adral gas. While bet\u00adween the months of Febru\u00adary and August, the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of lig\u00adni\u00adte fell sub\u00adstan\u00adti\u00adal\u00adly below the respec\u00adti\u00adve months of the pre\u00advious year, a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant reco\u00advery was recor\u00added as of Sep\u00adtem\u00adber.<\/p><p>Due to the sche\u00addu\u00adled shut\u00addown of the power plant Phil\u00adipps\u00adburg by the end of 2019, nuclear ener\u00adgy expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced a decli\u00adne of 14.4 per\u00adcent in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty in 2020.<\/p><p>All told, rene\u00adwa\u00adbles increased their share in the total ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon by 3 per\u00adcent to 1,962 PJ, or 66.9 Mtce, in 2020. Hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric power plants (exclu\u00adding pum\u00adped sto\u00adrage plants) sup\u00adpli\u00aded 5 per\u00adcent less elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty than in the pre\u00advious year. In con\u00adtrast, the con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon of wind power increased by 7 per\u00adcent. Solar ener\u00adgy recor\u00added a plus of 9 per\u00adcent. Bio\u00admass exhi\u00adbi\u00adted only a slight plus of 1 per\u00adcent. Pri\u00adma\u00adry ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon from bio\u00adge\u00adnic was\u00adte was 1 per\u00adcent below the pre\u00advious year\u2019s value.<\/p><p>The con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon of other ener\u00adgy sources \u2013 pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly non-bio\u00adge\u00adnic resi\u00adden\u00adti\u00adal and indus\u00adtri\u00adal was\u00adte \u2013 drop\u00adped by almost 15 per\u00adcent to a total of 189 PJ, which trans\u00adla\u00adtes into 6.4 Mtce.<\/p><p>With about 21 bil\u00adli\u00adon kilo\u00adwatt hours (bil\u00adli\u00adon kWh), the nega\u00adti\u00adve balan\u00adce in Germany\u2019s elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty exch\u00adan\u00adge with its neigh\u00adbor\u00ading count\u00adries was con\u00adsider\u00ada\u00adb\u00adly smal\u00adler in 2020 than in the pre\u00advious year. Not only did the elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty volu\u00adme which flowed from for\u00adeign count\u00adries into Ger\u00adma\u00adny increase signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly, but also the elec\u00adtri\u00adci\u00adty flows from Ger\u00adma\u00adny into its neigh\u00adbor\u00ading count\u00adries took a down\u00adturn.<\/p><p>The pro\u00adpor\u00adti\u00adons of the diver\u00adse ener\u00adgy sources of the natio\u00adnal ener\u00adgy mix shifted fur\u00adther in 2020 when com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advious year: Fos\u00adsil fuels expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced an over\u00adall decli\u00adne so that the ener\u00adgy sup\u00adp\u00adly in Ger\u00adma\u00adny was able to redu\u00adce its car\u00adbon inten\u00adsi\u00adty even fur\u00adther. Howe\u00adver, a cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adristic fea\u00adture con\u00adti\u00adnues to be the broad ener\u00adgy mix. More than 60 per\u00adcent of the dome\u00adstic ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon account for oil and gas. Hard coal and lig\u00adni\u00adte coll\u00adec\u00adtively encom\u00adpas\u00adsed almost 16 per\u00adcent of the con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon.
